The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the hit series coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

On the Tremendous Viewer Reception

One could easily to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.

“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Has the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the classics?

“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
