The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
