The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
