Seamer Atkinson Exacerbates the English team's Injury Worries.

'Major setback' for the touring side as Atkinson leaves the field due to a hamstring issue.

Gus Atkinson added to the injury concerns plaguing England after leaving the playing area early on day two of the fourth Ashes Test against Australia.

The pace bowler pulled up with his left leg post-delivery that he bowled during the morning session.

Team management indicated the 27-year-old had experienced "tightness" and required time on the sidelines to undergo evaluation "during the day".

The series decider of the series at the SCG begins on Sunday, 4 January.

The visitors have previously lost key quicks one seamer due to knee trouble and another paceman with an abdominal strain on this Ashes tour.

A replacement bowler was called up as injury reinforcement.

Atkinson struggled in the opening two Tests, managing only a handful of scalps.

He was left out of the third Test, before being recalled for the Melbourne Test in the playing XI.

Surrey's Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, bagging two scalps with the ball, then making 28 with the bat being one of only three English batsmen to reach double figures.

Following a brief spell in Australia's second innings, he resumed on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman Scott Boland caught behind.

However, on the final ball of the fifth over, he sent down a change of pace to Travis Head and immediately felt for his hamstring.

Atkinson was brought back for the Melbourne match following his omission the previous Test.
