The movie, however, may align too neatly with the mythologized image circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and its pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a made-to-measure version of the president. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a Russian James Bond who always knows beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series launched last fall, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. Its main character is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. A new film based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by framing him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, the president is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody actually pleaded with him to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a selection process with no shortage of candidates. Central to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, among them a reformer later murdered and a former spy chief.
• Per an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.

Analysts concur that the image of Putin as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his “recruitment work” in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not engaged in actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “007” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation prompted Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with their leader. Edited images swapping Craig’s face with his appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an star well-liked by Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

Domestically, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears on screen. He is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it might seek to examine.
