Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He fought the legal system and justice won.

Two months after getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now seems jail-bound.

Imminent Incarceration

The adjudicated coup-monger – who's been living under residential detention in his residence while a number of judicial steps and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the next few days, during increasing rumors that he will be moved to a notorious high-security prison.

Historical Comments on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the far-right ex- soldier displayed scant compassion for the country's prison population.

“Why should we offer these scoundrels a good life?” he once pondered. “They should just get screwed, period. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up there, all you have to do is to avoid rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Location Discussion

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, four of whom this week toured the facility in an obvious attempt to prevent the high court from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the elderly politician to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious digestive problems – the result of a near-fatal stabbing during the last political campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He won’t be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It would be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells holding 40 prisoners: “It's virtually one meter squared per inmate.

“We conversed to the inmates and they complain, of course, of the awful food,” continued the senator.

Backers React

The senator isn't the sole person expressing views prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated imprisonment.

Writing in a leading newspaper, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the greatest political injustice in its history”.

“It is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of millions people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied General Reaction

It is possibly accurate considering the significant backing Bolsonaro holds on the conservative side. However his predicted jailing has also warmed the spirits of many others who think he deserves to be imprisoned for planning to prevent the elected leader from becoming president – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current administration's allied group, said: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get respectful handling – but proper treatment behind bars. He cannot continue being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time praising the harsh handling of convicts, had unexpectedly become aware to their entitlements. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has always asserted that basic rights were not for criminals – decided to inspect a prison to learn what conditions are actually like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, insulting handling”.

Likely Incarceration Conditions

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now houses about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely destination appears to be a nearby prison for police officers and other “special” prisoners known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are far more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the stunning presidential palace, approximately 20 kilometers away.

Based on sources, the room Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – approximately the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter WC with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a television and additionally a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” information indicated.

Partisan Reactions

He denounced the rumoured proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his outcome in the {
