The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
